It takes your breath away … in a less grave context, it would be comic.
The USA bangs on about wanting to encourage the development of "democracy" in the "Arab world". Today the Palestinian Authority areas saw an election which comes closer to that aim than anything yet seen, and … the USA doesn't like the result, immediately condemning it and issuing barely veiled threats.

Later addition (Jan 27th, 0755Z): Jim Putnam offers a much more constructive line which might have been taken - but, alas, in the same breath notes that he "didn't see it reflected anywhere else". He adds that "It may not have made a difference, but then again, it could have". An important difference it certainly would have made is in the way the USA is seen in the outside world.
