Torture

"While most people will say, ho hum, no big deal..." says Dr C, regarding confirmations that the USA has used torture on prisoners.

In many ways, acceptance of torture as no big deal is worse than torture itself.

No ... unqualified, that was a stupid thing to say. For the poor sod being tortured, nothing could ever conceivably be worse. But for a supposedly civilised society on whose behalf the torture is carried out, torture perceived as no big deal is more shameful, more disgusting, more fatal that torture as an abhorred anomaly. The latter is condemns the torturer to the deepest cycle of hell; the former condemns us all.

This contribution, short and sweet as the good doctor puts it in a subsequent post, is just to add my voice in seconding his.
