Yesterday I read, for the first time, one of Alexander McCall Smith's No 1 Ladies Detective Agency novels. Not the first one ... I had seen a delightful TV dramatisation of that, by Anthony Minghella, so picked this one up just because it was on sale at a low price, and found that I had the eighth in the series: The Good Husband of Zebra Drive.
Several turns of phrase prompted me to insert fragments of bus ticket into different pages as markers, but at the end I am particularly prompted to pull out and share this one:
"...three people had died ... Three stitches taken out of our shared blanket."
I think that's simple and lovely.
Pages 157-158 in my Abacus copy (ISBN [978] 0 349 11773 7)
