Today is Hiroshima Day

If you are new around here, you can find out why I think this worth mentioning in the equivalent post two years ago. There have been plenty of new examples since then, but the principles remain.

If you're not new around here, you will already have recognised my annual marker and moved on.

Nuclear weapons are a sink that drains goodness out of those who have them. I am proud to have a brother who has worked tirelessly in arms control since the early '70's. He had an editorial in Science on the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (Science 21 May 2010: 953).

But, the troglodytes who populate the Republican Congress won't give Obama even the slightest accomplishment. I'm afraid that ratification of the CNTBT will be one more victim of the recent breakdown in America's ability to govern itself. Even if it means the survival of the World. As for those Senators like Mitch McConnell:

"When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets."
